Finding Solutions, Changing Lives

We believe that necessity drives invention. Many of Fledglings popular products were created by parents or small companies who wanted to alleviate a particular need. By identifying problems raised by parents and carers we continue to seek solutions and drive innovation.

Rucksack keeps children safeJunior backpack with harness 5

Many children with a learning disability have no concept of danger and so leaving the house can be nerve racking for their parents. Fledglings discovered a small backpack with reins and a harness, which meant that parents could safely hold on to their child, without having to hold their hands - these rucksacks were hugely popular. However, as the children grew older they wanted a larger rucksack to better meet their needs. Fledglings approached the manufacturer and together brought to market the larger version that parents and children had been asking for.

Boy in Houdini suit

Special pyjamas save the day

"My son who is eight has profound learning disabilities and for the last six years or so smeared his faeces, which has caused no end of problems and distress. At the end of a tiring day, I have spent most evenings obsessively checking on him, cleaning him, cleaning his pyjamas, bedclothes, walls, carpet, curtains, sometimes several times each night, and sometimes for weeks on end. This has been my single most difficult problem, and at times I have despaired. The Houdini suits supplied by Fledglings do not allow easy access to his nappy, and therefore greatly slow down the damage he can do, minimising mess and giving me a little more lead time in cleaning him. They are such a simple, but such a clever, item. I would not be exaggerating if I said they made the difference between being able to cope, and not able to cope, and it is these little things that matter so much. We're very grateful to Fledglings."  - Philippa (parent)

Boy Wearing Wheelchair CoverA wheelchair but no rain cover

When Fledglings was first getting off the ground, we were contacted by several families who had been supplied with a wheelchair but no way of covering the child up in the bad weather. Fledglings began working with a manufacturer of lovely adult wheelchair covers to introduce a children's range. A few months later these garments were tried and tested with several wheelchair users and 10 years on we have now supplied hundreds of families who are now able to take their children to school and keep them dry!

Girl Swimming 2

Ear protection for little girl who loves water

"Zoe is two and has cerebral palsy. She loves the water and has really enjoyed going to hydrotherapy sessions. However, she also suffers from recurrent ear infections and perforated eardrums, and the ENT specialists had told us she was not allowed to go swimming. She has had perforated drums since the start of December so has missed out on hydrotherapy for nearly two months now. Having bought the ear band-it from Fledglings, we took this along to the ENT appointment last week and having mulled things over for a bit, the ENT consultant has given us the OK to take Zoe back to hydrotherapy, and today will be her first session. It really makes a difference that she is able to go to this again as it is really beneficial for her condition and is something she loves. So thank you very much!"             - Alice (parent)

Unitard

Special vests reassure children, and their families

These special Unitards were developed by Fledglings in response to parent requests. These close fitting garments provide sensory feedback to the wearer and can help autistic children to feel secure. They also help prevent inappropriate undressing.

"As you can see a perfect fit - it was great for the summer nights - keeping the heavy nappies well in place... he thinks they're great too - they look just like his dad's bicycle shorts. He tells me he's going to wear them riding his new bike to work - just like daddy!" - Sonya (parent)

Following the success of the Unitard we have now developed the Shortie Popper Vest. This is made in the same close fitting fabric but also has poppers at the crotch for easy nappy changes. As children feel comfortable wearing it they usually do not attempt to undress. We have now included both of these products in our Product Brochure for other families to benefit from.
